Dr. Qiao has been extensively working in development, research and application of advanced and high performance materials (smart materials, polymer composites, and sustainable concrete) in civil and aerospace engineering. His research interest includes Analytical and Applied Mechanics, Smart and Composite Materials, Interface Mechanics and Fracture, Impact Mechanics and High Energy Absorption Materials, Structural Health Monitoring, Integrated Intelligent Structural Systems, Materials Characterization, and Sustainable Concrete. His extensive publication record includes 300 technical publications [two books and six book chapters, 128 international journal articles (117 published, 3 in press, and 11 under review), 8 journal articles in Chinese, and about 155 conference proceedings papers]. His publications have been cited about 1,000 times in SCI with h-index of 17. He also has three nonprovisionalent applications in area of hybrid composite and lattice structures for blast and ballistic protection. Dr. Qiao won Best Paper Awards twice from the Composites Institute and was the recipient of Modern Plastics Magazine Best Technical Paper Award from Modern Plastics Magazine and Best Research Paper Award from the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction. He is the 2005 Outstanding Researcher of the Year in the College of Engineering at the University of Akron (the 1st recipient who received this award at the Associate Professor level). He was selected as the 2006 changjiang (Cheung Kong)’s Distinguished Scholar by the Ministry of Education of the People Republic of China and honored with the 2007 Outstanding Technical Contribution Award (the 2nd recipient in the award history) from the ASCE Aerospace Division for his contribution in the area of “fracture mechanics of layered structures”. Most recently, he was honored with the 2011 Outstanding Faculty Researcher (Researcher of the Year) award at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Washington State University
